- Where to Stay for This Koh Samet Itinerary

If you’re visiting Koh Samet for a long weekend, arriving Friday afternoon and leaving Monday morning gives you the perfect balance of exploration and relaxation.
This itinerary is based around a realistic stay at The Cocoon Hostel, using its central location near the pier to make everything easy and walkable. You’ll experience the island’s best beaches, quieter viewpoints, great food, and memorable evenings — without ever needing to rush.
Whether it’s your first visit or you’re returning for another stay, this plan helps you make the most of your time while keeping the experience relaxed and enjoyable.
Day 1 (Friday): Arrival, First Beach, and Fire Show Evening
2:00 PM – Check in and settle
After arriving on Koh Samet and checking in at The Cocoon Hostel, take a few minutes to settle into your room, have a shower, and adjust to island pace.
One of the biggest advantages of staying near the pier is how easy everything becomes. There’s no need to arrange taxis or transport — the beaches, restaurants, and main areas are all within easy walking distance.
This makes your first afternoon simple and stress-free.
2:30 PM – Walk through town and stop for a late lunch
Once you’ve settled in, head out and walk down the main street toward Sai Kaew Beach. This first walk is the perfect introduction to the island.
You’ll pass small local restaurants, cafés, fruit shake stands, and convenience stores — many of which you’ll likely return to over the next few days. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, and everything is built around slow, easy exploration on foot.
Stop somewhere along the way for a late lunch. This is a great opportunity to try simple Thai dishes at local prices.
→ See our full guide: Best Budget Restaurants on Koh Samet
There’s no fixed schedule — just take your time and ease into island life.
3:30 PM – Spend the afternoon on Sai Kaew Beach

Continue down to Sai Kaew Beach and spend your first afternoon by the sea.
The beach is wide, clean, and ideal for swimming, with plenty of space to either sit in the sun or relax in the shade of the trees. The water here is usually calm, making it perfect for a gentle swim after your journey.
Your first afternoon is also the perfect time to enjoy a beach massage after travelling. You’ll find massage ladies set up along the beach offering both full body Thai massages and foot massages. It’s one of the classic Koh Samet experiences and a great way to fully relax into island life.
If you prefer something more comfortable, Tonsak Resort is a great spot to stop for a cocktail and a foot massage. They have comfortable bean bags, good drinks, and a relaxed beachfront setting — ideal for easing into your first day.
One of the biggest advantages of staying at The Cocoon Hostel is how close everything is. You can stay as long as you like without worrying about transport — when you’re ready, it’s just a short, easy walk back.
This first afternoon isn’t about doing everything. It’s about slowing down, settling in, and letting the island set the pace.
5:00 PM – Return to the hostel and get ready for the evening
By late afternoon, head back to the hostel to shower and rest before the evening. After a few hours in the sun, this break helps you reset and makes the evening feel more enjoyable.
One of the biggest advantages of staying centrally is how easy this is. You’re only a few minutes’ walk from the beach, so there’s no need to carry everything with you all day or worry about transport. You can move between beach and hostel effortlessly.
Take your time — evenings on Koh Samet are relaxed, and everything is close by.
6:00 PM – Evening drinks at Cheers Bar as the sky changes colour

Around 6:00 PM, head back toward the beach and walk a few minutes south to Cheers Bar, located on a beautiful stretch of sand at Ao Hin Khok, just past the mermaid statue and the main Sai Kaew area.
While you won’t see the sun dip below the horizon from this side of the island, the sky changes into soft pinks, oranges, and purples as day turns to night. The atmosphere at this time is one of the most peaceful and beautiful parts of the day on Koh Samet.
Cheers Bar is a great place to experience this. They have comfortable seating directly on the sand, and their menu includes well-priced beers, cocktails, and smoothies, so there’s something for everyone.
It’s an easy, relaxed way to begin your first evening on the island before continuing along the beach to watch the fire show.
Cheers bar is pinned in our interactive map guide.
8:00 PM – Fire show at Ploy Talay (base yourself at Hayhaa Bar)

For the best experience, head to the small beachfront bar next to Ploy Talay called Hayhaa Bar. This is one of the best places to watch the fire show.
Hayhaa Bar is run by Pi Rin, who is a great host and has created a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. It’s also where many of the fire dancers themselves spend time before and after the show, which makes it feel more authentic and less commercial than the larger venues.
Find a seat, order a drink, and enjoy the performance. The fire show is one of Koh Samet’s classic evening experiences and a memorable way to spend your first night on the island.

After the show, it’s an easy walk back to the hostel.
If you feel like staying out longer, there are plenty of good options nearby depending on your mood:
- Play pool and have relaxed drinks at Lima Bar
- Stay and hang out at Hayhaa Bar
- Watch live sport at Old Amsterdam or PS Bottle Bar
- Head somewhere livelier like Gecko Bar or Silver Sand

Day 2 (Saturday): Jungle Nature Trail and Beachfront Lunch
8:30 AM – Hike the Koh Samet nature trail

Start your day with one of the island’s most rewarding and often overlooked experiences: the Koh Samet nature trail.
(See our full nature trail guide here.)
This hike takes around 1–2 hours and leads you through the island’s interior jungle, offering a completely different perspective from the beaches.
The trail begins near the Sai Kaew visitor center and climbs gradually into the hills, passing through forest, historic sites, and viewpoints along the way. One of the highlights is the scenic viewpoint overlooking the island, as well as the ancient kilns — a reminder of Koh Samet’s past long before tourism arrived.
The walk continues through peaceful jungle before descending toward the island’s reservoir.
It’s a quiet, beautiful experience that most visitors miss entirely.

11:30 AM – Lunch at Tubtim Resort

From the end of the trail, it’s just a short walk to Tubtim Beach, making Tubtim Resort the perfect place to stop for lunch.
This beachfront resort holds special significance for us — it’s where Nick and May got married — and it remains one of the island’s best places for a relaxed meal by the sea.
The restaurant is well priced, serves excellent Thai food, and has comfortable seating directly on the sand.
After the hike, this is the perfect place to recover. The Thai green curry with roti is especially good after a morning on the trail.
Take your time here, enjoy the view, and let the island slow you down again.
1:00 PM – Walk back via Tubtim and Ao Phai beaches

After lunch, begin your walk back north toward town, following the coastline through Tubtim Beach and Ao Phai.
This stretch of Koh Samet is ideal for slow exploration. The beaches here are smaller and quieter than Sai Kaew, with clear water, soft sand, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
You don’t need to go straight back. Stop for a swim, sit in the shade, or have a drink at one of the small beachfront bars along the way. This part of the island is best enjoyed without a schedule.
Walking this route also helps you build a natural mental map of the island, making it easier to decide which beaches you’d like to revisit later in your stay.
3:00 PM – Explore the southern beaches by scooter or taxi
In the afternoon, head south to explore the quieter beaches on the island.
You can either rent a scooter or use the local songtaew taxis. Renting a scooter gives you more freedom and allows you to explore at your own pace, stopping wherever you like along the way. If you’re comfortable riding, this is the best way to see more of the island.
If you’d prefer not to ride, the green songtaew taxis are a reliable and easy alternative. They run the length of the island and can take you to all the main beaches.
→ See our guide: Koh Samet Taxi Guide: How to Use Songtaews and Prices
Two of the best beaches to visit are:
Ao Cho – This is a great first stop. Head to the relaxed rasta bar or Flower Power Beach Bar, both of which have a laid-back atmosphere right on the sand. It’s a great place to stop for a drink and enjoy a quieter side of the island.

Ao Wai – One of the most peaceful and beautiful beaches on Koh Samet. On calm days, the water here can be completely clear and still, almost like glass. Ao Wai is less developed than other beaches, which is part of its charm. There aren’t many beach chairs, so it’s a good idea to bring a towel and relax under the small trees that grow naturally along the sand, providing shade.

Take your time exploring. This part of the island feels more remote and unspoiled, and the slower pace is part of the experience.
6:30 PM – Sunset at Ao Prao or Laem Toei viewpoint

Finish your day by heading to the west side of the island to watch the sunset. Unlike the east coast, this side of Koh Samet faces the open horizon, allowing you to see the sun dip fully into the sea.
There are two excellent options depending on your preference:
Ao Prao Beach – The easiest and most comfortable sunset spot. Ao Prao is a beautiful west-facing bay with soft sand and calm water. It’s home to several beachfront resorts where you can sit with a drink and watch the sunset in a peaceful setting.
Laem Toei viewpoint – A quieter, more rugged sunset location. This viewpoint offers a more natural and less developed setting, with expansive views across the ocean. It’s a great choice if you prefer something quieter and more atmospheric.
Both options offer a completely different perspective from the east side beaches and are well worth the trip.
After sunset, head back to town for dinner and a relaxed evening. You can keep things quiet with a beachfront meal or revisit one of the bars you enjoyed the night before.
→ See our guide: Best places to watch the sunset on Koh Samet
Day 3 (Sunday): Sunrise Option and Island Boat Trip
Optional: Sunrise at Ao Luk Yon
If you wake early, sunrise at Ao Luk Yon is one of the most peaceful experiences on Koh Samet.
Located just north of the main pier, Ao Luk Yon is quieter and less visited than the main beaches. In the early morning, the sea is often completely calm, and the island feels still and undisturbed.
It’s a simple place, but that’s part of its appeal. Watching the light slowly spread across the water is a completely different experience from the busier atmosphere later in the day.
If you prefer to sleep in, you won’t miss anything essential — this is purely optional.
Slow morning – Relax, breakfast, and visit the temple
Sunday morning is the perfect time to slow down and enjoy a relaxed start to the day.
You might choose to spend some time at the hostel, watch Netflix, catch up on messages, or simply enjoy not having a schedule for a few hours. After a couple of active days, this slower morning helps balance the trip.
When you’re ready, head to Ziggy Cafe for breakfast. Ziggy is one of the best spots on the island for western breakfast.
After breakfast, consider visiting Wat Koh Samet, the island’s main temple. It’s located in a peaceful area near the reservoir and offers a quiet contrast to the beaches. It’s not a large temple, but it gives a small insight into the local side of the island that many visitors miss.

Plan to head back to the hostel around 11:30 AM to shower and prepare for the afternoon boat trip.
→ See our guide: Find the temple and other places of interest on our interactive map
12:00 PM – Six-island boat trip and snorkeling (includes lunch)

The six-island boat trip is one of the highlights of visiting Koh Samet and an ideal way to spend your final full afternoon.
These trips typically depart around 12:00 PM and include lunch, making it a convenient and easy experience without needing to plan anything separately.
(See our full Koh Samet boat trip guide for exactly what’s included and how to book.)
You’ll visit several nearby islands and snorkeling spots, where the water is often clearer than the beaches on Koh Samet itself.
Expect a mix of:
- Snorkeling in clear, shallow water
- Visiting small nearby islands
- Swimming in quiet bays
- Lunch served on board or on one of the islands
- Seeing Koh Samet from a completely different perspective
The trip usually lasts most of the afternoon and returns around sunset.
It’s a relaxed, enjoyable experience and one of the easiest ways to explore beyond the main island.

Evening – Final dinner and last night on the island

After returning to the hostel and showering, head out for your final evening.
This is a great opportunity to enjoy one more memorable meal by the sea.
Kitt & Food is an excellent choice for well-priced Thai food served right on the beach in a beautiful, relaxed setting. It’s one of the best places on the island for authentic local dishes without resort pricing.
If you’re in the mood for something more upmarket, Winkks Beach Club offers a more polished beachfront experience. It’s more expensive, but the atmosphere, service, and setting make it worthwhile. Winkks also has one of the most highly polished fire shows on the island, and live music is common — often featuring a full jazz band, lead singer, and backing vocalists.
Alternatively, you may prefer to keep things simple with a quiet drink, a short walk through town, or an early night before departure.
After a full few days exploring Koh Samet, most people naturally settle into a slower pace and enjoy the calm atmosphere of their final evening.
Day 4 (Monday): Slow Morning and Easy Departure
Enjoy a final relaxed morning
Your final morning on Koh Samet is best kept simple.
Take a walk through town, grab a coffee, or enjoy a quiet breakfast before your journey. Mornings on the island have a calm, unhurried atmosphere, and it’s a nice way to bring your stay to a close.
Because everything is close together, there’s no need to rush or plan anything complicated.
11:00 AM – Checkout and use the hostel facilities before departure
Checkout is at 11:00 AM, but if your boat departs later, you’re still welcome to relax at the hostel.
One of the most useful things you can do is take advantage of the shower facilities before leaving. This allows you to enjoy your final morning fully without worrying about travelling salty or uncomfortable.
You can also store your bags safely and spend a bit more time enjoying the island at your own pace.
Easy walk to the pier
When it’s time to leave, the pier is just a short walk from the hostel.
This makes departure simple and stress-free, without needing taxis or extra planning.
It’s one of the small details that makes staying in a central location so valuable — especially on your final day.
→ See our full guide: Don’t stress about the boats — see our full Koh Samet boat timetable guide covering all ferry and speedboat options.
Where to Stay for This Koh Samet Itinerary
To follow this itinerary easily, staying near the pier makes a big difference.
You’ll be within easy walking distance of:
- Sai Kaew Beach
- Restaurants and bars
- Boat departures
- The nature trail starting point
- Taxi routes to southern beaches
At The Cocoon Hostel, everything is just minutes away on foot, allowing you to explore the island without stress or complicated transport.
