Easy – all walkable from the pier
Standing guard at the pier is a fearsome figure from Thai legend. The sea giantess comes from Phra Aphai Mani – the epic poem by Sunthorn Phu set on this island – where she plays both villain and tragic character. She represents danger, desire, and the wild forces of the ocean.
Tucked quietly along the island path, this sacred shrine is dedicated to the Naga and the Buddha – symbols of protection, spirituality, and good fortune. A place of genuine local reverence, not a tourist attraction.
By the shore at Sai Kaew stands a monument to one of Thai literature’s most enduring love stories. From Phra Aphai Mani, the mermaid and her child represent devotion, sacrifice, and the bond between mother and child – set against the island that inspired the poem.
Hidden among the trees is the island’s only temple – a small, working Buddhist monastery where monks live and local life continues quietly. A calmer, more grounded side of Koh Samet than you’ll find on the beach. Dress modestly and visit respectfully.
The west-facing shores, particularly Ao Phrao, catch the full show as the sun drops. Pick your spot, wait it out, and you’ll see why people keep coming back to this island.
After dark, the beach comes alive. Performers spin and throw flames along the main shoreline most nights – it’s free to watch and worth staying up for. Timing varies, so ask at reception when to head down.
Mid-tier – worth a short ride
At the island’s southern edge, this viewpoint looks out over open sea and jagged coastline with almost no one around. One of the quieter corners of Koh Samet – the kind of place that makes the effort feel worth it.
A colorful Chinese shrine by the sea, dedicated to a protective goddess of sailors and travelers. The setting – bright red and gold against the coastline – is striking. Worth pausing rather than just photographing.
Hard – for those who really explore
Climb to the top of the island’s nature trail and the view opens up – jungle dropping to sea in both directions. It’s earned. Wear shoes, bring water, and go in the morning before the heat sets in.
Not on most maps. Not on most itineraries. The kind of view that gets passed between guests who actually went looking. Ask at reception for directions – we won’t post them publicly.
